Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion is performed in patients with herniated discs and spondylosis. The approach is done from the front of the neck under general anesthesia. The intervertebral disc(s) are removed following which the spinal cord and/or nerves are decompressed. The spine is subsequently reconstructed and stabilized using cage(s) packed with bone graft followed by placement of plate and screws into the adjacent vertebral bodies. The patient is typically discharged the same day or the next. Over time the bone will grow into the adjoining vertebral body and become one. A cervical collar is typically utilized postoperatively.
